Lincoln and Douglas in Debate Sculpture         

The Lincoln and Douglas in Debate sculpture depicts the part of the 1858 debate between Abraham Lincoln and Stephen P. Douglas that established the Freeport Doctrine.  A seated Lincoln portrays quiet strength as he listens to the reply to his question of popular sovereignty by Douglas, standing emphatic with arm outstreched. The monument below is located at original debate site, Debate Square, Freeport, IL.

The most celebrated sculpture by Lily Tolpo is the Lincoln-Douglas Joint Debate of 1858 sculpture for the city of Freeport, Illinois, at the original debate site, Debate Square. Celebration of the debate was captured by a  C-Span documentary and a bronze model presented to the President Bill Clinton White House.
